Colour test samples and landscape collages

Last week I sampled my colour themes to manipulate architectural buildings. Below I have used cuts of the whole image as I wish to use the full image for the test itself (I will post full images after conducting the test). Here are some samples so far:





I kept the features simplistic as I wanted to focus purely on colour and not graphic detail. As can be seen I am using the colour schemes from my previous post I created. In order to avoid anyone guessing right by deliberating choosing the opposite 'style' in contrast to colour, I will depict around half of the images as their true style using their accurate colour theme. I hope by doing this I can make sure the participants are choosing on colour and whatever architectural sense they may have.

 Whilst creating these test samples I noticed that windows can, depending on the context, have a very visible identity in architecture. By using these 4 motifs as seen below I realised that even the shape of a window can alter the style of a building vastly and play a very crucial part for identifying the architectural style of a building.



In addition I did some quick cut and paste collages using nature/architectural elements from Pakistan to create references for potential fantasy landscapes. The images themselves are not refined however I feel that by doing this I was able to consider viewpoints and how certain positions can set the overall mood for the image itself as can be seen below. I feel that all three images depict various scenarios: 'stepping onto a vast landscape' by the framing of the tree, 'searching for an answer' by looking upwards to the sky and 'sipping a cup of tea watching people pass by' by peering through an archway outside. 

 I thought by doing this I could start to develop my own scenarios which would fit within my fantasy world. I also believe by using real references I can accurately depict details which I hadn't fully considered yet e.g. the jagged edges of a mountain side, the intricate woodwork carving of a column or the glimmer of a turquoise pool etc. I will continue to analyse this more after finishing with my street view and colour tests.

Literature review afterthoughts

Having spent the past 2 weeks drafting my literature review for my Design Research module, I managed to explore my research area through academic texts. I found that there were a few people who had at least researched into areas relating to my own and it felt encouraging to know that more people than I realised cared about the same issues. My research question is:  How can South Asian representation be authentically implemented in fantasy video games? Although I thoroughly enjoyed reading the relevant texts I chose to compare and critique, writing the review itself was an uphill struggle. I found that I had lots of points to make but not all of them relevant to my research question, and initially I had over 4000 words of notes (the word limit being 2000). Street View, Colour Schemes and Finished Maya Model

Due to illness I have been unable to post here recently, however I will recap on the work I managed to do in the past 2 weeks.  Firstly, I have been developing upon my 'street view' of the South Asian fantasy world. I believe in the terms 'South Asian' and 'fantasy' there is a heavy emphasis on the colour used in order to make these terms believable. Fantasy is to push the boundaries of reality into the surreal, and I believe it is my role to create a convincing fantasy to the viewer. I have started to do this with the use of language on signage (in this particular image I am using Urdu, a language I know and therefore can verify its meaning). 3D Character Modelling

After researching the essential/desirable skills for a concept artist in gaming, I found that although 2D skills were necessary, a lot of jobs required knowledge of a 3D modelling software. From my experience in architecture I had previously used Maya to create a mask for building forms, therefore I've chosen to improve my modelling skills in Maya and hopefully by the end of year have a good level of proficiency in it.  From watching the tutorials Josh sent me, I started to model a weapon as a way to get familiar with the tools and create quick forms using a reference:  I have found it a lot easier than I expected to get used to the manipulation tools. This method starts with a form most similar to the shape you want (in this case a cuboid) and manipulating vertexes to follow the reference image.
